Available on: PlayStation - Released: June 2000
When it was first announced in the spring of 1999, Special Forces looked like a very promising game. Wanting to continue telling the story of Mortal Kombat with action/adventure side games, series co-creator John Tobias started work on the second Mythologies title (the first being Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero).
This time players would be able to take on the role of either Sonya Blade or Jax in a prequel and reveal their story involving Kano and the Black Dragon from the beginning, eventually leading into the first Mortal Kombat game. However, half way through the game's production, John Tobias, along with a few other employees, left Midway to form their own company (known as Studio Gigante). This left the game in shambles and its future questionable.
Eventually, it was announced that the game was still in production and that it would hit store shelves in July 2000. When it did, it was almost nothing like the game we had previously seen. Only Jax was playable, none of the burning questions were answered (such as how Kano lost his eye), and the overall gameplay was horrible. Maybe this one would have been better off being shelved after Tobias' departure after all. |
